How to choose vitamins

A good place to start when choosing a supplement is considering how much you have to spend. A multivitamin can pack in a number of different nutrients in one, which is more economical than buying each vitamin individually. However, if you know you need more of a particular type of nutrient, such as vitamin D or iron, you’d be better off opting for a particular product, because the amount you need might not be sufficient in a standard multivitamin.

Then there’s the formula – if you don’t like swallowing tablets, you can opt for a powdered or liquid supplement instead. Nutrients don’t just work on their own either. Calcium, for example, requires minerals like magnesium in order to work in the body and, hence, is often sold as a combination of the two. Vitamin D also needs magnesium in order to work, whilst vitamin C is better absorbed when we eat iron. When you’re choosing a vitamin, consider whether you’re getting the right amount of other nutrients to help it to work otherwise you might not see the benefits.
